If you have suffered with pain for some time you have no doubt had to endure some of the most difficult and unpleasant life circumstances a person can face. You’ve suffered both physically and emotionally, and as the pain has persisted it seems as though life is shrinking. For many people with pain it seems like so much of their time is devoted to controlling or eliminating the pain.

You may feel as though you are sinking in quicksand.

The more you move your arms and legs and struggle to get out, the more it pulls you under. Every movement you make seems to make it worse. Each time you try to lift one foot to step out, the other one sinks further down.

In fact, there is only one way to free yourself from the quicksand

You have to work with the quicksand and lie out spread-eagled coming into contact with as much of your body as possible. This allows the quicksand to support you rather than pull you under.

Pain is very much like quicksand, the more you fight against it, the more of your life activities it takes away.

The alternative is to come in contact with your pain in order to be free from it.

First you need to learn to live your life with some pain, and then it may go away.

But even if it never fully goes away you’ve learned how to willingly open to pain without allowing it to control your life.
